History of Kirkwood PDF Print E-mail
Established in 1853 as the first planned suburb west of the Mississippi, Kirkwood Missouri was named after James Pugh Kirkwood who was an engineer in charge of locating and engineering  the railroad.  This 9 square mile community is home to some 27,000 residents in West St. Louis county.  The pride is evident in the parks, aquatic center, ice rink, outdoor amphitheater, ball fields, picnic sites and play areas, but the city jewel is the train station build in 1893 which is of the National Register of Historic Places and serviced daily by Amtrak.

There is a strong sense of community in this City.  The police department has 55 commissioned officers with a very active and involved public and therefore offers safe neighborhoods and high property values.  The City services are extensive and employs some 250 people in a variety of departments.  Kirkwood schools continuously achieve one of the highest graduation rates in the country.
